THE INSPIRATION FOR TROY'S AMAZING UNIVERSE
by Sharon Kennedy Tosten
Several people have asked how I can up with the idea for the Troy books. My son Troy is very intelligent, and has always been cheerful. But often he was totally in his own separate little universe.
The AHAA! moment for me was one day when he was seven years old. At this point in Troy's life he looked and acted like a two year old. Literally, people would say, Gee he's so small to be walking,,,and when they asked me how old he was, and I answered "seven", they looked at me like as if I was insane.... Troy often babbled incoherently and waved his arms uncontrollably.
However, here and there he would show moments of absolute brilliance. We would be in the car anywhere and if I made a "different turn" to stop somewhere I did not usually...he would point in the correct direction and say 'Home". I found this amazing since we could be twenty miles from home and yet he always knew the way. My neuro-typical daughter could never manage to direct me around the block and she was 4 years older then him.
One day when we were in the car, Troy, who I thought was just staring out into space, pointed to every sign on the way home...and said the words. You'd have to listen to understand...but he did it. Wal-mart, Wendy's, Dunkin Donut's, 7-11. I said to my self WOW! What an amazing point of view. I wonder what a story would be like completely told from his point of view. And that's how it started.

The books are exciting action adventures but told from a main character that is completely unique and has a different awareness than any other Hero in movies and books today. I think this makes the stories more engaging and much more poignant. They are geared for ages 7-12, but to me they are Family books. I tried to make them enjoyable for the entire family to read. I always make sure to drop of a few copies to every school library where Troy attends. It has really helped the other children understand Troy, and all of the other children who have challenges, and to see them as the heroes they are.
